While photographing a wedding on the beach here in Key West in amongst the onlookers I saw a little girl smiling as she was looking at the bride. She exclaimed "she looks beautiful like a princess, mommy!" And, so her impression and quest of the perfect wedding dream begins.
She watches all the fairy tale movies presented, you know the ones, boy meets girl, and after overcoming all the obstacles preventing it, they fall in love, they declare their undying love with a kiss, yes, finally the kiss, the romantic moment you have been hanging on the edge of your seat for! The next scene in the movie is of course the wedding, yes, a perfect wedding, you don't see all the planning that it takes, but, the moment is there and you see it from all different angles. You hear the music in the background letting you know the ceremony is starting, you see the groom standing with the Officiant, waiting on the brides procession, as she approaches where the groom is standing, and in the next scene you also see her from behind, next the look on the groom's face as he beholds her beauty, and the look on her face as she shyly glances at his eyes. With loving smiles on their faces, they are asked their intentions. After the "I do's" the ring exchange, another moment waited for, the wedding kiss, and the vows are sealed!
And so, the celebration of the newly married couple begins, moments that will never be duplicated, details that will be missed, emotions that fill the heart with joy, love, and laughter! How will you be able to recall your wedding? How will you be able to share it with family and friends who were not able to attend? Who will you trust to this once-in-a-lifetime event? Will it be a family member or friend? Someone who may not be familiar with the area chosen for the wedding ceremony?
Speaking from experience of photographing hundreds of weddings for most of my life here in Key West, Florida, only a professional can deliver to you what your heart looks for in both your photography and video of your wedding. The ideals and trends for wedding photography have changed throughout the years, from medium format, to 35mm film, now to digital, the importance of photography is there, everyone knows it: to capture the essence of that time with loved ones and friends, the methods used to do so are constantly advancing. Enlisting the advice and experience of a professional photographer/videographer is priceless. How do you find such a professional? How do you know they are professional? What sort of references do they provide? How many years have they been shooting weddings, and is that where there true experience of photography lies? Are they the professional photographer that will be shooting your wedding? Or will it be hired out to a lesser experienced photographer? Will they give examples of complete wedding photo albums, or just a select few good ones? With an outdoor wedding, will the photographer you are considering using know how to make adjustments with the camera to capture the overall beauty of the area and of the two of you?
So how does one find such a professional, and better yet, how do you know they are professional? What about their references, do they have reviews you can read? How many years have they been shooting weddings? Is it a hobby, or something just done in their spare time? Will they be the photographer that will be shooting your wedding, or if a "better, higher paying job" comes along, will they hand your wedding over to a "lesser experienced" photographer to shoot? Can you see examples of their work in complete wedding albums, or are you given just a "sample album" to view? Is your wedding venue outdoors, an uncontrolled environment with constant lighting changes and are they experienced and knowledgeable on how to adapt the camera functions to accommodate those changes? Will the finish product your presented be one that causes your heart to well up again with the same emotions you felt the day you wed? These are the questions for you to ask, you're the one doing the hiring, so don't be afraid or timid. Remember always, it's your wedding, your dream, your vision, better yet, it's your perfect wedding, with your happily ever after, staring the two of you as the prince and the princess.
