About Bird Hunts On Pheasant Hunting Lodges

By Jerri Perry

Pheasant hunting lodges offer a lot more than just the chance to shoot birds. Hunters aren't expected to rough it out in the outdoors, sleeping in tents or sleeping bags and eating canned food with freshly caught game by a campfire. Rather, these are high-end experiences complete with luxury accommodations, succulent meals cooked by chefs and all the other trappings of a classy vacation.

It's important to know that there are plenty of differences between lodges, since each one has its own way of organizing shooting and hunting trips. Some raise the birds in pens, keeping flocks of chukar, doves, quails and pheasants. The birds are released right in time for hunters who simply need to aim and shoot.

Shooting raised birds is relatively easy and a good catch is virtually guaranteed. But it's more of a target practice kind of thing that's very different from the real art of tracking birds in the wild with the help of pointers and then being able to aim and shoot quickly just after flushing out a covey. A lodge that offers such an experience is considered as the real deal.

Most every lodge has the same plush cottages equipped with all the trappings of modernity, and they'll handle all the meals and transportation issues with the same high level of service. Many also provide training for new hunters, along with the gear that's needed. It's also possible that they'll be able to take care of the licenses and permits that are required to comply with local regulations.

But the key to what makes a lodge a really good choice is the type of hunting grounds it offers and the availability of all kinds of wild birds within the property. It's important to find a place that has plenty of wooded areas, marshes, waterways and reservoirs including ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and brooks that attract ducks and migrating birds. On such properties lush with flora and fauna, it's not so hard to hit the bag limit very quickly.

The location and topography also makes a big difference. Some hunters like the freedom of the vast plains of prairie grass, while others prefer the challenge of forests, mountainous terrain and rocky ridges. Others may feel more at home in the marshes close to the oceanfront where migratory birds land by the thousands.

Most every lodge that invites guests for hunting trips offers package deals. These are usually affordable weekend stays or 3-5 day luxury packages that are all-inclusive. Guests do not have to worry about a thing, and can focus all their attention and energy on finding and shooting birds.

The thing that most people remember afterwards about pheasant hunting lodges is the incredible rush and thrill of the kill. But the meals are quite memorable too, since the food is from the fresh catch that the hunter has literally put on the table. The satisfaction is doubled because it's expertly cooked into mouth-watering bird meat dishes by expert chefs.
