Career Preparation: Graphic Design

By Franklin Skribbit

Recently a photo of Morgan Freeman surfaced on the Internet that someone was claiming was not actually a photo, but a sketch using a certain application on their iPad. They even had the video to prove it. The resemblance was uncanny and the detail made it look like a real photograph. This marked a change in the way people visualized web design. Here are some of the other affects this has had on web design.

Go to college This may seem rather obvious to some people but if you truly want to get started and have an edge in a graphic design, then you should go to college for graphic design. Future employers will like that you have studied graphic designed and will be able to see your dedication and desire through your degree. It is absolutely possible to still get a job without a degree, but if you have the resources, then plan on getting your degree. It will help you be successful in your field.

Your university is not going to go out of their way to accommodate you. They will expect that you have been in school for long enough that you have figured out how you learn. Some newer schools have changed the way they do business to have a more individualized approach. This approach doesn't apply to all schools, so you should look for it if that's something you feel like you need. Your success in your university is up to you.

Adobe suite - If you are looking into a career in graphic design, then chances are, you know exactly what adobe suite is. But knowing what it is may not be enough. Some companies might offer some training to help you get started but many companies don't offer any training and expect you to already have experience using Adobe products. If you want to have an edge then you should master the Adobe products. There are training courses that you can take that will help you get acquainted with Adobe products. It might be a good idea to consider some of these training sessions. Not only can you use these for your own work or for building your portfolio but you these can also be a huge asset when you are applying for a job in the graphic design industry.

Swiper, More Swiping - Web designers have also had to teach themselves how to create websites that are tablet-friendly in terms of swiping. Studies of those with tablets have shown that they want to take advantage of the touch screen abilities by touching everything. However, they may get lost in all of that swiping. You can design a web page to make it easier to navigate by using arrows to point in the direction to swipe to.

A good rule of thumb would be to eliminate anything that takes your sight line away from what you're working on at this moment. Your smartphone should be one of the first things that's put away.
