The Secret To Affordable Designer Clothing

By Lila Bryant

The fashion magazines are filled with spreads showing models in stunning outfits. Then, of course, you read the captions and see how much each outfit actually costs. Luckily you don't have to sell your car, your house and a kidney to be able to wear big-name brands. You just need to know the secret to affordable designer clothing.

If you want to be able to wear clothes by top designers but don't have the budget for this, the first thing you need to do is realize that you don't need to wear the latest ranges all the time. In fact, slavishly following the latest trends can make you look a little desperate or nouveau riche. If you choose wisely, it's perfectly possible to wear items from last season or even from a couple of seasons ago without anyone thinking that your look is outdated.

With classic, timeless pieces it becomes very easy to benefit from sales. Early in January as well as at the end of each season, department stores and fashion houses often offer their clothes at hugely reduced prices to make room for new stock. If you choose carefully, for instance a pair of jeans in a classic style or a simple little black dress, it won't matter that you make your purchases at the end of a season, because these items will still be stylish next season and even for many years to come.

Another good way to find great bargains is to look in second-hand stores. There are many online retailers that specialize in pre-owned designer clothes. Even charity shops sometimes have items that are still in great condition and will cost you only a couple of dollars. It does take some dedication to browse through these shops, though.

Wearing vintage designs is something that even the rich and famous do. Actresses who have famously worn vintage gowns when they received the Academy Award for their work include Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Penelope Cruz. Roberts had to ask a tailor to adjust her gown, a Valentino design from nine years earlier, so that it would fit perfectly. Her dress is still one of the most memorable in red-carpet history. Witherspoon's beaded Dior gown and Cruz's embroidered Balmain dress were both half a century old and first worn in the 1950s.

It's best to avoid fake designer items. Counterfeiting is a crime and supporting this industry is not very ethical. Besides, real fashionistas can spot a fake from a mile away.

Supporting only the famous couture houses is the sign of an unimaginative dresser. Instead, keep an eye out for the work of young designers. Their designs are often more striking and much less expensive.

It's also possible to look like you're wearing designer clothes even when you're not. Many retail stores sell items that were inspired by a couture design and you'd never know the difference unless you looked at the label. Then add brand-name accessories such as sunglasses, which are often among the more affordable pieces from a fashion house's collection.
